The short version
I'm Emma Leonhart, founder of Topaz Computing. I build software that improves itself while it runs. So far that's a new programming language, a research paper, and a working operating-system prototype, shipped solo, without a PhD or an institution behind me.
How I got here
I didn't come up the usual deep-tech way. No doctorate, no lab, no one handing me access. I taught myself, got my work onto Google Scholar, and networked my way into the AI-hardware world through Discord and cold outreach: conversations with companies building the next generation of chips, and a venture-capital meeting along the way.
Every door opened on the strength of the work and how I showed up, not on a credential. For the record, the credentials are a Bachelor's in Economics and an Associate's in Computer Science. The rest I built.
What I've built
Each of these is a working artifact, not a slide:
- Sutra, a programming language where whole programs are continuous and learnable. Public on PyPI as
sutra-dev, with a paper submitted to NeurIPS 2026. - An operating-system prototype written in Sutra, running with a terminal, a calculator, and a clickable interface (206 tests passing, 1 expected-fail).
- The first product: a landing page that optimizes itself in real time, from every visitor.
How I build
Crystal, not cloud. A cloud is opaque and remote; you can't touch it or see inside. Topaz is something you can hold and look through. The running system is one inspectable network, transparent by construction.
I build the way I named the company: in the open, all-in, no plan B. If the work is good enough, you don't ask permission. You ship.
The usual deep-tech founder has a doctorate and an easy fallback, and hedges the bet accordingly. I have neither, and I'm not building one. This isn't optimism. I went in clear-eyed about exactly what I was giving up, and committed anyway. That is the bet, and I am not hedging it.
Where it's going
Software first: pages that learn from real visitors. Then the same core grows into an operating system, and out to the edge, where adaptive AI has to run close to the world. The web product proves the loop in public and funds the road.
